THE LOS ANGELES ATHLETIC CLUB
When the owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club needed to find a qualified contractor to refurbish and redesign their existing rooftop deck, they contacted Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing. The plan was to upgrade the entire roof deck so it could be used for weddings and other high end events. The contract also included waterproofing the lower roof decks and eyebrows. The Athletic Club bldg. is a 13 story high-rise located between the financial & historical districts in downtown Los Angeles. It was originally constructed in 1911 & is classified as a Historical Landmark. The project called for the complete removal of all existing roof materials, the installation of a new Class "A" roof system and finally topped off by a "Tile-Tech" raised pedestal pavers walk deck system. The specified work also included the removal of two 5,000 gallon water tanks & all existing chain link fencing so that new stainless steel cable rail type fence could be installed. This project had to be completed inside of a 4 month window in time for events that had already been scheduled later that year. The required work & location made the logistics of this project a monumental endeavor.

Before any new materials could be installed the specifications called for the complete removal of numerous layers of built up roof material (Some of which contained asbestos) as well as two large water tanks and two raised concrete pads that were used for tennis courts in the 70's and 80's. CRW was tasked with the removal, containment, and decontamination of all asbestos laden roof material as well as the demolition, removal, and disposal of the two raised concrete pads.

With help from Nielsen Environmental, all existing roof materials were stripped and removed, the new material needed to be crane loaded onto the roof deck. Meanwhile two 5,000 lb. water tanks and a large HVAC units were scheduled to be disconnected and lowered down from the roof so they could be dismantled and hauled away. Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing hired Bragg Crane Service out of Long Beach to take on this task. In addition to closing the entire street in front of the Athletic Club, 12 semi-tractor trailer delivery trucks were scheduled and directed through congested downtown Los Angeles so that 164 pallets of roofing material, pavers, & fencing could be loaded onto the roof deck and all discarded equipment hauled away in one day.

The contract called for the installation of a TPO roof system and Ceramic Raised
Pedestal Paver deck. In addition to the new roof and raised paver system, CRW was contracted to supply and install a new stainless steel cable rail & chain link fence

After months of planning, hard work and careful coordination, the Los Angeles Athletic Club Roof Refurbish Project was successfully completed on time and on budget.
