Helpful Tips To Address Your Leaking Roof
While you’ll need emergency repairs as soon as possible, it can be overwhelming to deal with them. Read on to get some helpful tips from Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing to put into action while you wait for our technician to arrive.
*Alleviate Interior Damage!
In many cases active roof leaks can be seen entering your building through your ceiling. If you have a drywall or plaster ceiling, we strongly recommend providing relief to the incoming leak area as follows:
1.) Place a bucket or trash can directly beneath where the water is coming in. (You may also wat to lay a tarp or plastic sheeting on the floor first in the event debris falls from the leaking ceiling during this procedure)
2.) Using a long screwdriver, carefully poke a hole through the ceiling directly in the center of the stain or leak area.
3.) Allow all accumulated water to drain. Leave the bucket until the leak tech repairs the leak or it stops raining.
4.) For multiple leaks, repeat this procedure in all leaking areas as you will likely need to repair or replace the drywall or ceiling panels anyway.
5.) For suspended or drop type ceilings, you may want to simply remove all wet and/or damaged panels to prevent continued water accumulation.
!!DO NOT attempt this on any ceiling leak(s) entering through or near a light fixture or electrical receptacle of any kind!!
Performing this procedure this will give the incoming water a direct path rather than allowing it to accumulate and pool on the ceiling material above. Doing this will - in most cases - prevent extensive damage and/or ceiling collapse.
*Be Aware of Fly-By-Night Contractors and Storm Chasers
Be extremely cautious when dealing with any roofer that would visit your home during or after the storm as many of them are “fly-by-nighters.” Once they finish the job and get your money, they’d most likely leave town. Storm chasers usually have no local presence, which means you won’t be able to contact them in case issues arise in the future. ALWAYS verify that the roofer has a valid Contractor's license in good standing with the CSLB, valid proof of insurance including; Liability, Workman's Compensation, and Automobile, and references.
*Seek the Help of a Reliable Contractor
When you detect signs of roof damage, active leaks, or if a tree has fallen over your home, get in touch with a reliable local contractor immediately. Apart from examining the extent of the damage, they’ll advise you when to file an insurance claim. They’ll also temporarily cover the damaged roof with a tarp to prevent further harm.
*Contact Your Insurance Company
If the damage is serious enough to warrant a claim, inform your insurance company immediately. They will schedule an appointment with your claims adjuster, so make sure your roofer will be there. Both parties will discuss the best course of action to repair damages and restore your roof to its original condition.
